Type 23 Frigate Mechanical systems part 2 (Reupload)
This is the re-uploaded part 2 of the type 23 frigate mechanical systems video which was originally released 3 years ago.
This follows on from the general introduction in part 1 and contains substantially more detail about the exact nature of the systems as they were from the late 1980s to the mid 00s. They have since been extensivly modified.
I mispoke at 00:27:18 when I said "Newer Type 42 destroyers". I meant "Newer Type 45 destroyers" and hopefully this is clear from the context.

A brief history of the Northrop flying wings (And why their cancellation was not a conspiracy!)
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 года назад
Jack Northrop (1895-1981) was an American aviation engineer best known for the series of companies bearing his name, and his work on flying wings between the 1920s and 1940s. No other company or individual did as much to perfect this unusual aircraft configuration. Yet in spite of having remarkably advanced aircraft flying at the end of the 1940s, his programs were cancelled and the prototypes ...

Foreshadowing of challenges for USN's Constellation to come?
@@shinybaldy to be honest my guess is that the newer electric ships using AC motors have a whole different series of issues. Also a lot of the RENK connecting gearboxes seem to have issues...
I look forward to rewatching this soon Olly - have to choose my moment.😉 Hope all well with you.😀👍
Thanks a bunch for your effort. Kindly share any technical details about the protection, such as the HV side of the step-up wind turbine and collector systems. Is it using overcurrent in reality to protect the HV cables, or are there others? Thanks again for your time.
Excellent overview - thanks! I am unable to find part 2. Are you able to provide link or repost?
@@michaelsummer3516 weird. I'm traveling but let me sort it out next week
Very detailed instructional video, love the drawings as well !! 😂 cheers !
I support home schooling, the parents can concentrate on the needs of the child, they can go at the pace the child is comfortable at, they are not indoctrinated by the education dept ie the system and they are free from bullying etc
Hey-up Olly, sorry home ed didn't work out for you or anyone in your circle. I know a couple of dozen now 20-somethings who went through the home ed experience and came out the other side as kind, creative, independent and fun(ny) upstanding citizens. Several of them were interviewed by Monica O'Connor ~2020: www.youtube.com/@monicaoconnor1810. Your folks had exactly the same design of sofa as we brought from England to Ireland in 1990!
@@kneolith great to hear. Yea those chintzy sofas were very popular, I think it might have been a Laura Ashley design. We had matching curtains too!
Wow. Is homeschooling very common in the EU or UK? I can see this could have been a very difficult subject to make a video to talk about - thanks for sharing.
@@shinybaldy luckily it's not very common at all. It was popular with alternative lifestyle unwashed people in the 80s but very niche. COVID unfortunately has breathed new life into it.
Really well explained and informative video. Thanks!
Re: CIWS: on the 1970s era Knox class, we had a sea sparrow launcher on the fantail. It was manually guided from an exposed rotating director atop the hangar. No small caliber automatic cannon. Accommodations: as an ASW Frigate, even at 4000tons, we had plenty of internal space for gear and crew. The downside is we were underpowered; top speed 29 knots with all the fixtures rattling as if in an earthquake. Speaking of seakeeping, we had twin stabilizers- these worked pretty well. The ships were stable.
HMS Kent hit 33.1 knots last year... with the wind.. wish i found these videos while doing my task book...
@@Drummond-do3zj that's pretty good! The transom flap made a big difference and I'm guessing they painted the bottom with intersleak paint or similar! If you lift the bunks in the three bed officers grot you'll probably find the words "olly was here"
Natural convection flow in the main coolant loop would have been a common noise reduction technique worth mentioning. I think sonar techs will say that the noise of the turbine generator's lube oil pumps was a signature of some classes of Soviet subs. The Soviet subs only got quiet after Toshiba sold them numerically controlled machining equipment in the early 80s. It was a big scandal. I trained at the nuclear prototype for the Tullibee, the early electric propulsion SSN. The Tullibee had a beam of only 23 feet and the prototype was very cramped.
Well, I was wondering CODLAG system as a mechanical engineer and I ended up here, thank you for your educational video! Greetings from Türkiye :)

I slept in 3Q mess deck at full chat my rack would shake, we were the furthest from the aircon furthest from heating and officers wondered why on each T42 3Q mess deck full of reprobates and troubles makers. The RN seems to have learned this lesson in the T45. Making living quarters especially comfortable.
3Q was pretty rank! I think the T45s were better although cutting out a section of mess deck to add the (Inevitably requried) additional engines probably hasnt done much for their comfort...

Just did my rear diff oil change today. Honda wanted £240 to do the job. My CRV is a 2017 model. drain on the drivers side. Filler on the passenger side. 35000 miles on the clock. I would be more interested to learn how you are going to RECYCLE these things in the next 15-20yrs, as they become uneconomic to operate ?
@@Philip-x3d have you tried Google? It's really very efficient. BBC News - When wind turbine blades get old what's next? www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-68225891
@@drawingboard82 I have seen plenty of videos on this, hence my question. Very funny and revealing that you refer me to THE BBC, as tho THEY are impartial. 😆 The type of plastics used makes recycling too costly, so they are dumped "out of the way" of prying eyes....except on Google Earth that is.
I did an Hull Draughtsman apprenticeship at VT and worked on Southampton, Nottingham and mainly Gloucester during our time with the various trades. Helped fit an accommodation ladder, sea dart magazine transport system, ops room false floor, weapons training datum’s, sonar dome, anchor arrangements and took part in fuel sampling and testing for contaminates. We had a lab for the fuel testing but remember taking samples to Eastney for further tests. The most memorable task was working with the shipwrights launch team on Gloucester going in early on launch morning to help knock the keel blocks out prior to launch. Once in the drawing office, work on the 42s mainly consisted of ink work on copies of drawings called film ozalid masters (FOMs), lots of scratching out … I seem to remember VSEL were the Lead Yard….

Yes, it was the Russians -- as NATO leaders have long known but haven't announced publicly because they'd rather not face pressure to retaliate. For commentary by Chuck Pfarrar, a well-known Navy Seal who is equally certain it was the Russians (but not using a pig), see ruclips.net/video/vml10vlV3CQ/видео.html&ab_channel=TVPWorld If I recall correctly, Pfarrar mentioned that the Russians had a motive related to a contractual provision -- something about force majure I think. I find it remarkable when I hear an American or a European suggest that the US or the UK could've been the saboteur. For an American to suggest that the US might be the saboteur is to in effect say "I don't understand my own country and my geopolitical instincts are abysmal." For starters, the sabotage caused the largest ever methane release into the environment. Biden is an environmentalist known for being somewhat hostile to the fossil fuel industry. The last thing he'd do is order sabotage that harms the environment just to secretly help the American fossil fuel industry sell slightly more fossil fuel to Europe. My main point, however, is simply the obvious: the US doesn't do that sort of thing. Nor does the UK. They don't secretly vandalize the infrastructure of their closest allies. Nor do they conduct sham investigations in the hopes that they can pin their crime on an innocent party. Nothing in American or British history suggests that they would do something like that. Everything in Russian history, however, suggests that kind of thing is exactly the kind of thing Russia would do.
Awesome!
Thanks mate, will be doing this job over this bank holiday weekend.

Salt or brackish water cooling in a motor is murder. In your shoes, I'd replace it with a car radiator, distilled water, and 60 % prestone antifreeze. In my shoes, l'll be looking to outfit a sailboat with a tiny 168F air cooled diesel, that can create more electric than propulsion, run forever, save a lot of weight, and keep one water circuit out of the boat. The dry heated air is quite welcome.
The Type 23 's are good looking ships.
